New Belgium – Transatlantique Kriek

The Lips of Faith program is considered the “playground” of brewing at New Belgium and these small batch beers are now available in bombers.  I recently had the La Folie, also part of the “Lips of Faith” collection which I enjoyed immensely.  I picked up a bottle of the New Belgium Transatlantique Kriek at The Best Damned Beer Shop – http://bestdamnbeershop.com/ (@BestDmnBeerShop on Twitter) this afternoon while walking home.  This beer is a partnership between New Belgium Brewing and Brewerij Boon of Belgium.  The beer is a Lambic style – Kriek (cherry) blended with a golden lager with an 8% ABV.

I selected my favorite Lost Abbey stem glass.  The beer poured a bright cherry red with a white 1/2″ head that dissipated quickly. Minimal lacing.  Nose is tart cherry with some breadiness but lacking the subtle funk that I typically appreciate.  The taste is tart cherry up front but not really what I would consider sour.  There was slight, albeit artificial sweetness on the finish.  The mouthfeel is very thin and dry with high carbonation.  There is little sign of the 8% ABV.   I was not thrilled with this beer.  I would have liked to have tried the original batch from the brewery. It is not representative of a Kriek but we must remember it was a blend with a golden lager.  I would probably not choose this beer but would however, consider offering this beer to friends, particularly women, that are just beginning to explore beer options.  I think it would be a pleasant starter beer for someone used to sparkling wine.

New Belgium Brewing

“In a never-ending quest to create new beers and defy category, New Belgium Brewing and Brewerij Boon of Belgium have partnered together again to create Transatlantique Kriek – a spontaneously fermented lambic ale made with Polish cherries.”

“This authentic kriek beer began life in the oaken vessels at Frank Boon’s brewery in the Lembeek region of Belgium.  After more than two years aging, Boon’s offering shipped across the Atlantic and found its way to the intuitive palate of New Belgium’s Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert.  After much sampling and internal consultation, Peter and his brew staff created a full-bodied golden lager to round out the light-bodied kriek.”
